Best $500-800 gaming laptop (new or used) that can play GTA 5? (If this isn't possible I totally understand.)

Hey guys,

So a friend of mine wants to buy a new or used gaming laptop for $500-800 and wants to be able to play GTA 5 on it. Now I know that GTA 5 is a hard game for computers to play, and if what they want is impossible at this price point, I totally understand. If it helps, they don't really care about how big the screen is because it's going to be hooked up to a TV most of the time anyway. Thanks for reading.

you should care about the resolution of the tv, because that will tell you if it is even possible or not. a 720p tv, yeah, we might be able to find you a laptop that can pull that off for that much, a 1080p? probably not going to happen.

I saw a video of the 850m on gta 5 and it looks good, but the y50 starts at about $1000. I found this on newegg; ASUS Laptop N551JK-MH71 Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit. Hows that look?

yes, it will manage 720p on medium. it will NOT manage 1080p on medium or low. this does not contradict what i typed. I know what i am talking about here. People, for some reason, overstate the ability of mobile gpus significantly.

It's how companies can sell "gaming" laptops with 4k screens paired with the functional desktop equivalent of a r9-270x. you aren't playing any game in 4k with a laptop like that, but boy did that company ever gouge someone for $2,500 buying that laptop with the 4k screen (btw: in order to visually see the difference between a 17" 4k and 17" 1080p screen your face would have to be <5" away from the screen. Believe me when i say gaming laptops are typically the worst combination of mismatched parts you can find)

as for the 850M, if your friend has a 720p TV it will be fine for that. if he has a 1080p screen he will not be able to play GTAV on it. (which is pretty much word for word what i typed in my last reply)

Refurbished means very short warrenty, right? In that case,I found the cheapest laptop with a 850m inside and mostly positive reviews; ASUS X550JK-DH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit. How's this one?

29FPS with a 10FPS min is not playable in that game. i know.

furthermroe he's not going to afford a Core i7-4700MQ in a $700 laptop. how those benches are aquired is VERY important. especially in a game like GTAV, which almost requires a SSD, a high end cpu and a above average gpu to play well. (yes, an SSD will help, it eliminates the zone loading lag spikes you get when driving), they benched that game with all of those parts. he's not going to get laptop with a SSD and a Core i7-4700MQ for 500-800 PLUS a 850M

btw: though i disagree with you about what type of playing experience he'll get with this, this is an EXCELLENT option. especially if it's a 720p tv. it's an excellent find and better then any option i've seen for playing GTAV on a laptop.

This is a good laptop which the OP should consider.

How is i7 4700mq better than i7 4710hq?
The HQ uses BGA1364 (it's soldered onto the motherboard), while the MQ uses Socket G3 so technically it's upgradable. Performance is identical on both. i7 4710hq actually sligthly faster on the paper.

What kind of fps do you think it would get on say, 720p medium settings? What about on high settings?

actually this is a good question. I'm so used to intel naming their high end laptop chip a QM i sorta spaced. no you're right. that laptop you speced out is about as good an option as he'll get. i still will disagree about the quality of gameplay experience in 1080p, however it still should be a good laptop for GTAV especially if the op's buddy played in 720p.

Medium 720p - 70+ or so
High (with mixed settings) 720p - 30-50
ultra (everything maxed) 720p - 20
