Best free 3D engine?

Hi all,
I am looking at creating my own first person 3D game and I was wondering whether you had any suggestions on which engine I should choose.
The engine needs to be free and I would like to make a slender style game with it.
I started using the unity 3d engine but when I start a new project it crashes.
I also looked at using the source engine but you need half life 2 in order to mod a singleplayer game.
Is it worth paying the money for half life 2 or is there a better engine for free?
I have no experince in coding and do not intend to learn about it anytime soon.

Just how do you propose to create this game if you don't want to code? That's how it's done son.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was originally going to mod games which (correct me if im wrong) doesnt need coding? However I have also seen many tutorials for different engines which do not require coding.
