Great article. Any thoughts on budget keyboards with more backlighting colors?
I've been looking at Perixx PX-3200 US, Programmable Backlit Gaming Keyboard

or the
UtechSmart Saturn 7 Colors Backlit USB Multimedia Gaming Keyboard

Pretty sure the "budget" option is listed at $59. In any case, a gaming/mechanical keyboard is a luxury item and a completely non-vital peripheral. A "budget luxury item" is a bit of an oxymoron anyway. If you're on a real budget, get a generic $10 keyboard :)

I can't stand the Razor keyboards. My wife had gotten one of the Black Widow Ultimates. The keys felt way too mushy like they weren't even mechanical and it quit working 2 weeks later. Durability seems to be a common issue with most Razor products from my experience. Luckily, she was able to return it for a refund.

I am currently using a Rosewill with Cherry Blue switches that I got for Black Friday at over 50% off (normally around $130). I am actually quite happy with the performance of it and haven't had the issues at all that I've seen some reviews give of it. A great budget board when on sale.

After almost a week of reading reviews of mechanicals finally I went to a shop to test the candidates. There I've seen the Roccat Ryos MX that I barely have seen included in reviews it wasn't on my list and I have paid no attention to it until the moment I looked on it. The build quality is excellent, the outfit is not at all a 'gamer' gimmick. I don't mind the fixed wrist rest it would be always on anyway. The software is brilliant, not simple but after the 2nd day I feel absolutely confident with it. It can do literally everything you need and even more. There is a good chance for someone who loves customizing a new hardware to be lost in settings for a couple of days. I'm still looking for flaws, one I can come up with is the secondary characters are not very well lit, but it's a common issue for Cherry mechanical as I've read the forums... I know the layout so it will be no problem to live with it after having the Fn+F1-12 functions memorized ... getting there already. I thought I will be missing dedicated media keys, but mainly volume - + and mute I'm using so I put them to T1-T3 it does the job for me. Every button is programmable to run macro or a software or whatever you want... awrsome!

Shame there aren't many "best x mechanical keyboards of 201x" like reviews promoting this absolutely brilliant hardware. I'm coming from a Logi G15 where my rubber dome and long button supporters got broken causig loose keys. The LCD on it I found very handy from the first moment and I've got attached in the last 6 years... yes, it has served it's time pretty well, I was a bit worried losing it until I found the roccat power grid software, solution to use mobile devices to show info and control desktop. Well, a proper AIDA64 implementation is still really missing, but... no but, I hope it (or a workaround) is coming soon. I have most of the info on it already, tho... but gpu usage, temps, actual multiplier, actual cpu speed is missing (for me).

If you are looking for a new mechanical but don't want "gamer" lookalike, consider this roccat beast.

the only one ive ever used is the G710, its nice and I love it. amazing how much positive reviews we have on other gaming keyboards. But why but another when the one I have still functioning to taste.

I love the old "Microsoft Internet Keyboard" ... its cheap and reasonably ergo.

I keep my eye of for these ... I also like the old HP black mechanical Keyboards ... they were particularly robust.

I bough the son a Razor (the green backlit model with the braided cable).

I had to sell one of my kidneys .. but the stitches are out now and my urine colour has returned to normal.

I still have the twitch in my right eye ... probably for playing Freelancer for a couple of decades.

I killed the arrow keys on at least 15 keyboards along the way.

:)
