I'm looking into some gaming laptops for a friend and was just hoping for some advice from people who have one or have had experience with gaming laptops. I've always had a desktop myself.

How well do they really perform?

Is heat an issue during prolonged gaming sessions?

Any suggestions of good models or brands? (around $1,500 budget.)

Solution
I have an Asus G75VX, and I really have no complaints for this beast. I upgraded to the G75VX from a G75VW, mainly because of nvidia 3D vision, both of them served me well(now I'm moving to desktop).
Anyways, heat was never an issue for me, I've played Skyrim for several hours with max temps being around 60C if i remember correctly. IMO heat depends on a lot of factors such as ambient room temperature and space around the air intake vents(which is why i bought a cheap cooling pad to give the notebook room to breathe).
In gaming, the performance of my G75VX was on par or perhaps sub-par with the desktops of its generation(nvidia's gtx 600 series).

The only issues i have are the weight and of course the inability to upgrade components...

For me personally i would have to recommend against it, from what ive seen and heard overheating problems are VERY VERY common..
Also the performance in even the top top end laptops are getting beaten badly by quite a few modern desktop GPU's
