I am starting JC very soon under a CS major, then I plan on transferring to CE at a 4 year university. I don't know if your school has any requirements on certain laptops but I use an Acer Aspire E5-575g here is a link: https
/www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-NVIDIA-Windows-E5-575G-53VG/dp/B01DT4A2R4.
There is an i5-6200U model for $550, and an i7 model for around $680. It has everything I need: A fast 6th gen i5/i7, 8gb of ddr4 ram, a 1920x1080p TN panel, a 940MX dedicated GPU! for the price, I don't think you can find a better alternative. The backlit keyboard helps out too.
I am a game developer(sorta) and a gamer. Coding works just a fine as on any other laptop. and most games are playable on this laptop. CS:GO runs perfectly smooth @ 1080p maxed out and more demanding games like the witcher 3 run around a good 30 fps on low @ 768p(which is fine and playable).
it also has an SSD which really helps it run faster. I have as few external drives for more expansion. Upgrading this thing is easy. there is room for another slot of ram and another unoccupied SATA port.
The TN panel isn't a bother for me and I think Acer made this thing very nicely. If the panel or the brand bugs you, Asus has a similar model with a IPS panel(768p) but for the price, you cant beat this. Im using the i5 model as im not under engineering yet. But get the i7 model if you want more computing power.
