Black Screen after Boot Failure

Yesterday, my Dell Inspiron 1545 refused to start. Ran "Startup Repair" twice and was finally able to see my desktop, but only very, very dimly with a bright light shining on it. After several attempts was able to do a System Restore. Didn't fix the black screen. Microsoft worked for over three hours, couldn't find anything wrong from their end. When I first turn it on, the Dell logo is bright, then half a second later, goes dark, barely visible. If it sits awhile and goes into screensaver mode, I touch the keypad and the screen lights up for half second, then dark again. Microsoft gave up. They want me to ask Dell if this is a known hardware problem. Out of warrantee, so no free questions. :( Can anybody help me? Would be so grateful.
