Solution
If it is the backlight, it will be relatively easy to repair. The key word is "relatively" - defined as "cheaper than replacing a motherboard".
If the screen is black, and you can't see anything, even as the machine boots up, try an external monitor to see if it's the screen or the video adapter. If it works on external, disconnect that and shine a torch on the laptop screen. If you can then see something, it's the screen's illumination has failed.

Solution, unless you have the skills and access to parts, is to see a repair guy.
