block IM to particular people

My IM comes on when I sign on first thing...I want to have a not available/ block setting for particular individuals. I am not the most computer savvy, but not stupid either. I am new to laptops and am finding navigating a bit of a trick Can someone please give me an unconvoluted answer to this please?

right click on the person you want to block and on stealth settings choose appear permanently offline to the respective person.
