It mean you have a old driver on your system that is not responding to low power requests correctly. windows tells the device to go to sleep and it does not or goes to sleep (low power state) and will not wake up. Window then thinks the hardware has failed and calls a bugcheck to stop the system.

generally this will be a driver for some OEM hardware and you would got to your machine vendors website and update the drivers for your hardware. it seems that most often it turns out to be a problem with your currently installed wireless network device, but it could be any piece of hardware that does not respond. You can guess and just update drivers or put your memory .dmp file on a server and post a link and someone might be able to tell you what the device that failed is.

reboot and run the sfc.exe /scannow command again to confirm the system is ok.
if you find errors do a malwarebytes scan.

ok, thanks, a couple of questions though, what exactly does softether do, and if it's useless, how do i delete it, and, this laptop is 4-5 months old, the date on the msi software says 2012 october which seems odd, and it has been unistalled since 2 months. And what exactly am i looking for on the msi page you linked me to, just so it helps, laptop is ASUS k551ln

ran sfc, totally fine, dism on the other hand goes to 20%, hangs and then goes to 100% giving error 3017

I would look in windows control panel for its software uninstaller and run it.

it is common for a machine you buy to come with old software, the people that make the machine, design it, make a windows image and never bother to update it and expect you to do that. Basically they set up a harddrive with the first machine then just copy the harddrive image to new drives that will be stuck inside new machines. The do not actually run windows setup again. You have to update everything from windows update and from the vendors website that will have versions of all of the custom software they put on your machine.


on the msi website you would be looking for a network driver to update, it should have a name like bigfoot or killer networks or LAN driver.

if you have a USB wireless ethernet device you would have to get a update for it also.
it is very common for these devices not to support low power links (sleep) and you often have to go into windows device manager and disable sleep for the device or find a updated driver that actually works.
