BootMGR missing and hard disk failure

My dell laptop: inspiron 1526, got some viruses after a friend borrowed it for a weekend and then it started to crash and eventually told me my hard disk needed repair. Now when I turn it on it says BootMGR missing. I just want to know if there is a way to fix this without sending it in. I'm not tech savvy in any way. If I do have to send it in, will it be cheaper to buy a new one or have them fix it? (orignially $699) thanks for your help!
