Bose 321 sound system with Sharp Aquos.

I have a 40" sharp aquos. Older model. lc-40e67un. I am trying to hook up my sound system which is a Bose 3-2-1 series 1. I am running an audio optical from the TV to the sound system but I am getting no sound. From what I have read the issue is with the TV and not the sound system. The optical capabilites on this tv are pretty much garbage. Does anyone know how I'd manage to get sound out of this system with this tv? Is there a converter I can use? And if not, is there a sound system out there that would actually work with this tv?

You may have to turn the optical output on, the TV speakers off and change the audio to PCM in the audio set up menu to get it working.

Thanks. I did try and put it to PCM but the option in the tv menu is grayed out. Also, how wpuld i go about turning the optical on? I dont see that option anywhere in the tv menu.
