Broken laptop screen, need to reset

HP Pavilion laptop has a busted lcd, I need to factory reset it but when I restart to go into recovery there's no signal to my external monitor via HDMI

Try disconnecting the display from the motherboard and seeing if the HDMI port works then. If the system has a VGA port, try that. Aside from that, you need the screen.
