and when he gets out in 8 years, he can start re-using all the information he was caught with because will take the victims that long to get everything cleared up.

This is why crooks in the USA do what they do, whether it be wall street, identity theft or stealing taxpayer's money. The gains are huge, compared to the paltry punishments. We really need to be tough on crap like this, like how it is in China. Something like this goes on there and they take you to the shooting gallery, where you're part of the gallery.

oh, no. 8years of 3squares a day, free healthcare, free education, cable TV, free fitness membership, many US prisons now offer congical visits, and a few even offer pets, plenty of access to alcohol and drugs, computer access... and whats the average cost per year to house an inmate, isnt it like $50,000? Yeah, that's a tough punishment for anyone... Hell that's better living than A LOT of law abiding citizens of this country. When the punishment fails to outweigh the crime that punishment will never be a deterrent.

Why not sentence him to fix all the problems he caused. You watch him be video camera to make sure he's doing it right, and he has to make all the phone calls etc... to clear up his victims identities. Wouldn't that make more sense?

WIth all the sensitive information in the mail it should be a no brainer for people to use a locking mailbox as a basic deterrent for identity theft. I'm not suggesting he stole all 300k people's information from the mail, but every day thieves are stealing information for identity theft from mailboxes. Don't send checks or bill payments from an unsecured mailbox either - bring them directly to the post office or use online bill pay, it's more secure.
