Camera lens (16-80 vs. 24-120)

Hey gang. I'm looking to buy a new lens for my Nikon D7100.

I'm down to these final two:

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm

Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 24-120mm

I mainly shoot sports, both football and basketball. It's college games so the arenas are usually well lit in general, and the football stadiums are lit well at night.

I can't afford something bigger right now, but I'm looking for something that can handle closeups and get a little distance (80-120mm range).

So, what do you guys think is the best option in this scenario?

At $1k each, I'd suggest renting both of them for a weekend, and see which one fits your style better.
