I know this is late, but in case someone else might want to know some details.

Yes it can. I have a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB in place of the original 650 GB HDD.

I also replaced the DVD burner with a 1TB 7200 RPM for storing data. The new one is much faster. But the SSD really does wonders regarding speed, it only takes a few seconds to boot.

BTW to exchange the DVD drive for a HDD, you need to purchased a special caddy that has the correct plugs to adapt the HDD sata plug onto the DVD sata plug on the motherboard. Check out eBay and search for "hdd dvd caddy", and find one for a dv6 3000 - 4000 series, they are cheap and it's really easy to do.

If you still need a DVD drive for burning or playing movies and games etc., you can turn the original internal DVD drive into an external burner, for the price of a "notebook DVD drive sata to e-sata cable" from eBay. They're only a few bucks.
