I have an old Toshiba Satellite L655-S5058 laptop, model number PSK2UU-002001 and would like to know if I can upgrade the memory or processor to handle Windows 8 or possibly Windows 10? It is currently running Windows 7 and has 3 GB of RAM.

Or should I just throw this laptop away. Thanks in advance.

The best you can do on that system is upgrade the RAM to 4Gb. It won't take more. You won't be able to install 64-bit Windows though as the CPU is not 64-bit capable, which is why they only put 3Gb RAM into it, I suspect.
You can also install a larger disk, but that's it.
I have a HP system of similar spec to yours and it runs Windows 10 just fine.

According to the spec at:

Your laptop came pre-installed with 64bit Win7 Home, which is a very good OS, IMHO.
Going to 4Gb will definitely help; but I suggest not upgrading to Win8 (which is a disaster), or Win10 (a good OS but will require more memory and more CPU power).

BTW, what's wrong with your laptop now? It should be pretty spiffy with Win7 Home.

The laptop is very slow both in start up and in operation. I've cleared as many programs as I can from the start up which helped a little but I am also running the latest Bitdefender 2017 Anti Virus software.
