Can any surround sound system be used on a Hitachi tv

No.

The surround sound "system" must have the input(S) necessary to MATE to your TV, so depends what kind of audio connections are available from your TV.

Provide TV's exact make/model, and budget and perhaps members here can suggest something. At this time perhaps you should also tell us WHAT else are you planing to hook up to this surround system, because that dictates how much current/future flexibility do you require.
