I don't believe there's much the cops can trace, though. The only way they find stolen desktops, I believe, is physically verifying serial numbers/MACs on suspected stolen goods.

It's probably the second-most expensive part in it. It's what your copy of Windows is licensed to, and what all of the MACs (except wireless, if present) are tied to.
There might be a serial number printed on the case if it's a prebuilt (Dell, HP etc.), but that's far easier to change.
