Can I have a mic and headphones working seperately?

I have headphones right now and I would like to talk online so I need a mic. I'm wondering, can I buy a mic and use it WHILE using my headphones, or do I have to use a headphone that has a mic attached to it?

No you can indeed use a separate mic and headphone. Microsoft allows you to pic the playback and recording device independently. If you wanted to, you could for example use the mic off a web cam and have sound playback through your speakers.

I recommend this mic if your going to use standard headphones for gaming.

Awesome. And are those 10 dollar mics that stand on their own bad or what? Because I need one with a USB, I don't think the one you linked will work with my computer

Any mic will work. The one I linked just plugs into a computers mic port which pretty much every computer I've come across has. Cheap desktop mics will not produce a favorable sound. They tend to sound distant and hollow if that makes any sense. It's more then good enough for gaming or skype. But if you want a nice clear sound for youtube or video production you want to spend some money on a good desktop mic.
