can i hook my cable into my tv with out a box

I was wonting to know if I can hook my coax cable in to the back of my tv and will it work

It matters where that coax cable is coming from. Is it connected to an antenna or does it go to a junction box that is connected to a cable TV provider in your neighborhood?
