Can I hook up a blu ray without using a hdmi port?

Nope.

A stand-alone blu-ray player? to a TV? not in any way that will maintain HD output as you won't have HDCP.

But why are your HDMI non functional is the more interesting question.

My stand-alone BR player has Component and Toslink so I assume if my HDMI is defective, the Component/Toslink would do the job.

how do you get round HDCP?

HDCP is only needed for 1080P, component will do 1080i instead, so if the player and tv have component video you can still use both.

I thought it only did SD without HDCP in place.
