can I unlock my Verizon iPhone from a contract to use as a Verizon prepaid phone, if I still owe money?

I owe money for my iPhone (device payments) and for the stupid contract I was on. can I take my iPhone and use it as a prepaid now? or is it just now possible since I owe Verizon money?
