can i use a 4 ohm sub woofer on a 8 ohm home theatre system.

Active Powered subs don't normally have a resistance rating on them, so i'm guessing you have a Passive Sub. In that case, the answer to your question is no. HTIB systems don't have the power supply required to push that sort of load. It would probably make sound for a while, before the power supply took a dirt nap.
