Can I use a GSM unlocked phone in Australia?

I am looking to buy an iPhone online and the site said the phone was GSM unlocked. What does this mean and can it be used in Australia?

This means you can use it with any carrier service in Australia - Telstra, Optus, Vodaphone as examples.

All you need to do is purchase a SIM from one of these providers on either a plan or with a set dollar figure .. .say $40 worth of credit.
