Can I use Express slot to improve wifi signal

I Recently purchased a Lenovo Y-50-70 and the WiFi reciever is TERRIBLE! When in the same place as my old laptop it gets about 1Mbps (Lenovo) vs 35Mbps (5 year old ASUS).

It has a Realtek RTL8723BE; I have tried updating drivers to no effect. If I move it close to the router it gets 40+Mbps. I am one floor up approx 10m from the router.

What is the best solution? Can i buy a wifi express card and just use that instead of my internal realtek RTL8723BE? Or are there better solutions.

The ASUS is getting a pretty good signal from being a floor away, many walls and especially floors drop WiFi speeds quite a bit.

A good USB WiFi card should help, look for "long range wifi USB card" on your favorite shopping site, it should be a usb dongle with an antenna or one that you can attach an antenna to with a wire.
