can i use my laptop as a tv screen, have cox cable but no tv at this time

Simply said - NO. Laptop' HDMI is output-only.

You can buy usb tv tuners and capture cards which can accept both the coaxle and hdmi. It isn't a direct connect but will get a video signal onto your laptop LCD.

These capture cards usually do not work with HDMI coming off cable boxes, DVD/BD players, etc for that exact reason - to prevent copying.

Some STBs have composite video outputs (which would allow for capturing), some not.

My cable provider, brighthouse, only protects the premium channels like HBO, and the pay per view stuff.
