Can my school really track my laptop use

I got a school macbook air and the teachers claim they have the power to see what I do on it. Is this true and how would I protect myself from it?

There are numerous ways they can track usage. I'm sure there are clauses in the agreement you made with them about attempting to circumvent them, so I would just not do anything stupid while using it.

Do you think a using a proxy and vpn while on their network will stop this?

And what if I have blocked all connections inbound on my firewall?

Like I said, it can probably be done, but I'm sure that somehow you agreed not to do such things when they gave you the laptop. I would bet that if you did, they would have the right to take the laptop back.
