Can you tone down a 4k monitor 60hz to 1440p monitor to a higher refresh rate?

I was thinking about investing in a 4k gaming monitor. Since they are, at the moment, 60 hz, I was thinking if it was possible to use the same monitor at a lower resolution with a higher refresh rate.

Only if it's supported. Some monitors might be able to do that, some might not. Some might only run 120hz at 1080P.
