Can you use a different control board for a different external monitor?

I have an external monitor with a broken control board and I was wondering if I could just exchange the control board and upgrade it so the monitor can have better graphics. Can I do this or is it going to have compatibility issues?

The control board in your monitor would not be upgradeable, would need to be the exact one and wouldn't change the graphics quality anyway,
