Change carriers by rooting Samsung Galaxy s6 Active

Hi,
So I'm planning on rooting my smasung Galaxy s6 because I can't stand the ridicuous phone bill from AT&T. I plan on switching to straight talk, but that's where my question comes in. If I root my phone, can I easily just switch carriers or is there something else I have to do? I read something about SIM unlocking but is that a necessity? Thankyou, any and everything helps, I'm new to all of this.

If you're out of contract with ATT you can ask for a code to migrate to another service provider.

If you aren't, rooting the phone won't make any difference. you have to serve your time with the provider that sold you the phone for less than retail.
