Why should the burden be placed on a search engine company? The ability to search for pornography has been around longer than google anyway, maybe China should work with google rather than laying blame on them.

in the modern world, its almost impossible to avoid porn.
what china should do for their people is educate them regarding porn.

"Google however stated that it has complained with China laws"

Who hasn't complained with China's laws

They probably want to keep the internet cafe's clean. After all, most people access the net that way, not from home.

Then China should force internet cafe's to install filters on their PC's and routers, if they haven't already. No, the simple answer is that China's morality police have deemed porn innapropriate and are doing everything they can to prevent its access. Many Muslim countries probably already do the same thing and we just don't hear about it cause they don't go after Google, they handle it all internally.

From an economics standpoint the whole world has given up on centrally planned markets (Russia - Berlin Wall). China has a free market economy with little regulation. Their government has to either move back towards central planning to retain control of the population or they risk losing control. Increased property rights in China increase foreign investment. The populations standard of living is on the rise. I do not think that China's government will be able to maintain control of a free market economy while also remaining Communist. A free market economy puts ever increasing pressure on the government for more freedom to increase market efficiency. Summarizing Alan Greenspan - The Age of Turbulence.

I blame Google.

They should have known that providing a service to a backward ass country, that has some seriously hypocritical policies and practices, was going to make it difficult.
