Screw China, block their IPs all together coming to the US. Seriously, we should ban all trade and communication with China, there are other sources. Our economy would probably improve if we forced some products to be made in the US instead of China slave labor. We'd have to pay more as consumers, but let's put our citizens back to work, not the Chinese.

As far as I know, every country in the world forces Google to censor their search results. Imagine if google provided results with child porn in them. The US government would freak out too. China just has the bar of freedom of expression moved a lot lower. Not saying I agree with them, but I can understand where they are coming from. If I was a dictator, I'd certainly want to stop my people from learning about all the bad shit I do.

Anyone thinking Google is doing this as a humanitarian effort is mistaken. Google sees the potential of 1.3 billion users (far in the future once net becomes more available to the outland areas.)They know they missed the boat on itunes and iphone, they're not going to make that mistake again.

so, google need to comply with this censorship rule because they establish an office in china and offer local google for china domain (http://www.google.cn/)?

So, if they pack and leave and let the Chinese citizens use their global google.com, still Google need to abide this requirement? If yes, what about other search engines available on the Net?

You certainly do have a point, even though I dislike admitting it.

While I do believe democracy is overrated, and I do realize that even in our 'high and mighty' countries censorship certainly exists (banned books list in schools anyone? and I though these were places of education), this is a fight I'd rather see Google win.
Our own governments have committed many acts which we and they are shamed by, but they must not be forgotten for nothing. I know the net is still a chaotic playground, but that's the way I enjoy it. If I want to visit 4chan.org, I will damn well visit 4chan.org! If my government is responsible for the torture of innocents, I damn well better know!
I may not be a patriotic man, but I will fight for what I believe in if anyone tries to take it away.

I applaud Google for standing up to China. Even the US government trade goods and borrow money from China.

If the Chinese knew how corrupted their government was, it will create national riot. I believe that is the main reason their government don't allow freedom of press and speech. The Chinese are not ready "uncensored" internet yet.
Maybe in the next century, after the government get rid of most of the corruption. Then the Chinese will be ready for the real internet.

a lot Chinese don't use google. they use Baidu's website for search engine. If google get out of china, it will not make a big impact on the users.

Politics aside, i think it's funny that little ol' Google is pressing china's buttons, and successfully pissing it's government off.

Yeah well, the USA is a different animal since Google is a United States Country and falls under the laws of the United States of America. In addition- it's not really censoring, since the information shouldn't exist in the first place (no doubt that when such sites are caught- the USA shuts it down)
