1. What is your budget?
$1000- $1500. I'd prefer to be closer to $1000.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Doesn't really matter. 14-15.6 is fine. I have a monitor.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
Again not really an issue.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable. Weight isn't a big issue unless it's a behemoth. I just have to carry it to class.

5. How much battery life do you need?
3-4 hours. I believe there are outlets in a lot of the classrooms but I'll have to take notes in lecture halls.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
I want to be able play games such as Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, and Counter Strike. Medium settings are fine as long as they run.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
I will be using engineering software. Also light video editing.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
I have an external hard drive so 500 gb is more than enough.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
4-5 years.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
I need a dvd drive but blueray is unnecessary.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I've been looking at Asus, Toshiba, and Sager. I don't want a Dell or HP.

13. What country do you live in?
US

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Every laptop I have found that I think suits my needs gets mixed reviews. I discovered the Malibal Lotus p150hm but I had never even heard of it so I question the reliability. Customizing a Sager laptop on xoticpc.com was yielding laptops in my price range with nice specs, but I'd like a second opinion.

Malibal / XoticPC / AVADirect / Origin / CyberPowerPC / Pro-Star are examples of 'boutique' custom laptop builders. Many of them use Sager/Clevo barebones kits and finish them up with the customers chosen options. For example MALIBAL will use a Clevo P150HM to build it's rebranded MALIBAL Lotus P150HM. Some boutique builders also use barebones kits from Asus, MSI and others - XoticPC would be an example.

Welcome to the world of portable computing.
If there ever was a laptop that didn't get mixed reviews I'd be very surprised.
Always a...

Always a compromise between size, weight, battery life, performance and price.
There is no perfect laptop and not everyone has the same requirements, expectations or budget.

you need a gaming laptop. you engineering needs will not be anywhere near where the demands for gaming are. most software you will need you will use in your lab class then if you need more time you will prolly have to go to a lab unless you feel the need to jeopardize you career and cracking a 20 grand cad package lol.

with that being said i would recommend a laptop with a gtx 560m and a i7 2630qm with a 7200 rpm drive and 8gb of ram. if you can get those specs you will be great.

I did find this notebook and have been considering getting it. Is there any real difference between that Asus and this http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8130-clevo-p151hm1-p-2973.html?wconfigure=yes Sager? They are pretty much identical from what I can tell. I only had to upgrade the Sager's processor and it still comes in about $40 cheaper, which is negligible. Is one better built than the other? Which do you recommend?
