hi, I have an old laptop v6131eu with 1gb ddr2 pc5300 (2x512mb) and i have 2x2gb ddr2. The max memory supported by compaq is 2gb. Can I install one module of 2gb or I must use 2x1gb ?

I'll suggest using the memory finder tools offered by most memory brands to find guaranteed compatible ram. That avoids any of the "it should work" answers since they guarantee it will work. Here's a few to get you started:

Listed in likelihood of having compatible ram from my experiences

I already have done this test. But I have 2gb module from other laptop and i want to know if i can damage the notebook if they are unsupported.
thanks

It would seem to me to be a fine time to experiment. There is little that it'll effect if it doesn't work, it simply won't work. If that's the case, go back to the stock setup.
As long as the ram is the same type (PC100, PC200, DDR, other) and physically fits, there should be no harm in trying. If they are not of the same type, then I won't suggest trying.
