So I'm deciding between which two laptops to buy when i head off to college as a CS major:

Lenovo G510's highest model http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/g-series/g510/

Asus R510DP http://www.amazon.com/Asus-R510DP-FH11-Notebook-A10-5750M-Quad-Core/dp/B00IXRH6J0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top#productDetails

The lenovo has a better processor, but the asus has a dedicated graphics card and 1920 x 1080 native res. I was leaning towards the asus just because of the dedicated graphics and better resolution for programming, but I'm not so sure. On the amazon link for the asus, it also doesn't tell me the battery life. Any thoughts?

screen real estate can be fixed (with a monitor), battery life and processors can't.

be honest, are you only planning to work on it, if so then the dgpu is not relevant unless your course is going to get you to program in cuda or similar.

Nope, I plan on doing some light gaming.

FYI, we've got 2 G500's in the family, and 2 of their predecessors G600's, the 600's have both lost return keys after 2+years, they are not very portable, battery life not for a whole day.

my son is going to uni soon, am buying a netbook style device for lectures and building a mini-itx box from spares and new parts for a working/gaming machine. hence he has portable power and desktop power, total cost perhaps 1.5 times a laptop.

Hmm...pretty interesting actually. I did hear that asus was the better company to deal with. Honestly, I'm leaning more towards the asus one now, thanks!
