My kids (7 &9) would like a laptop for Christmas. Mostly so the can play minecraft and do homework. My mom wanted to get them each a laptop in the $250 range. I am concerned we won't be able to get one that plays without lag. Can anyone suggest a laptop or all in one that can play minecraft without problems in that price range. Or are we going to maybe just get 1 computer? I don't know much about computers so I appreciate your help.

Get a restraining order from civil court that bans your mom from communicating with your kids until they are old enough to get a job and buy their own laptops. 😀

At $300 each ($50 above your budget), you can wait for BestBuy's Black Friday sale that starts on Nov 27th to get two 15.6" Dell Inspiron Touchscreen. It comes with a Core i3-4030u and the Intel HD 4400.

Probably close to impossible to get a laptop in that price range for minecraft. And even if you do get a single computer, the kids will always be fighting over who get to play all the time. But if you are dead set on buying something, try the Asus VivoBook X200MA on bestbuy here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-11-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-celeron-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-black/7894037.p?id=1219300344470&skuId=7894037

Your giving elementary students their own laptop!!! Dude, that is some major spoiling; I question your choice. Anyways to answer your question, the ASUS 15.6-Inch Dual-Core Intel 2.16 Ghz Laptop, 4GB RAM and 500GB Hard Drive will run minecraft perfectly. http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Dual-Core-Intel-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1416179600&sr=1-2&keywords=laptop&pebp=1416179603799

You think that's bad? I know a few kindergarteners from when I used to teach elementary school who had iphone 5s's when tehy came out. Live in Northern Virginia and you'll see how spoiled the kids here are.

Well my plan was to give them one computer at Christmas to share. Which I don't think is that excessive. My 9yr old needs a to be able to access the internet pretty much everyday for homework and has started to show an interest in programming( mostly using scratch and apps at school) and while he uses my computer I would prefer he didn't as my computer is used for my job (work from home). But my mom wants to gift them the computer and really wants to get them each one. I really would prefer they share but trying to tell her what she can give isn't so easy.

Thanks for the recommendation though.

Oh I see your problem. I'm sorry if my statements offended you, didn't see the full background. How about you just buy them a cheap tablet, it will be able to run Minecraft Pocket Edition and your 9 yr old can access the internet to do homework.

EDIT: Forget about the tablet, the kids will rage at the limited features.

I wouldn't recommend the tablet route, minecraft pocket edition isn't great and having to type things on a tablet is annoying aswell.

But thats just my view on it, take how you want.

The Intel HD 4400 is capable of running Minecraft at up to 1920x1080 resolution with good frame rates if graphic settings are tweaked down. But since the laptops only have 1366x768 resolution screens no tweaking is required. I have tested Mass Effects 3 and Star Trek Online using the Intel HD 4400 on my laptop at 1600x900 resolution and have no problems running those games. It can even be used to play Skyrim with minor tweaks.

So far that is probably the best deal for an decent laptop at a low price. I suppose I can provide updates if I come across anything that is decent which is closer to the $250 budget...
