Solved! Computer wont turn on with new battery

I have a Toshiba laptop that I've abused by not unplugging and using the battery and then left on for far too long without shutting down. Now the computer is dead. I bought a replacement battery thinking I killed the first one. Put the new one in. Nothing. (although a dim green light flashes on the caps lock key) Connected the power cord thinking things need to charge, still nothing, but an orange light does come on above the battery icon. Is this laptop toast or am I not doing something right?

You can look up the blink codes for the lights on Toshiba support site. That flashing caps lock key is probably trying to tell you something. Does the system not work even with the battery out?
