connect an acer laptop to a mac display

I have a Mac 25" cinema display which I bought to use with a Mac book pro (works great). I now also have an Acer laptop with a CAD package and would like to use the big screen with it for CAD drawing. I bought a female DVI-I to male VGA adaptor form Maplin which connect the two but no picture can anyone help?

You need the Mac to PC monitor converter, check the one you bought to see it is the mac to pc adapter or not.
