Hi there. so basically i have a laptop that i connect via HDMI to a TV to watch movies.

I also have a DVD player with a home theater that has 5.1 and i would like to get the audio from my laptop to it.

The DVD player has an optical spdif input but my computer only has the headphone output, or USB.

So what would be the cheapest way to getting the audio out? Is buying an external sound card my only option?

Thanks in advance

Sure. So the home theater is a Samsung HT-TZ322

And the laptop is an Asus K501UX

Your TV model number?

Check to see if your TV and home theater system support an Audio Return Channel or ARC (may be a specific HDMI connection on the HDTV). This would allow audio that normally just plays on the HDTV (PC to HDTV would be doing this) to be transferred back to the home theater system to be played through it's speakers.

Failing that, you could probably connect your laptop's headphones/audio out port to the AuxIn analog audio inputs on the home theater system and use the ProLogic II Mode to simulate surround sound.

The TV is a Philips 42PFL3403/77

Wolf. From what i could read they don't have ARC. If i do the latest would i still have 5.1 speakers sounding indepentently?

I took some pictures from the TV and home theater. The laptop has an HDMI output and the headphone 3.5mm output.
