You can't just connect them with an HDMI cable? You may want to provide some details what issues you are having.

Connect the laptop HDMI out to one of the TV HDMI inputs.
You may need to select the input on the TV and then boot the laptop rather than the reverse.
If the laptop resolution is greater than the TV you won't get a picture.
Set the HDMI output as the 2nd display and you can then set the resolution and other video settings to match the TV without changing the laptop display. I find it's handy this way too..
