Connect newer HDMI TV to a older 5.1 Surround Sound Receiver

Receiver Model Number: RCA RT2500

How would one connect the two to receive the best possible audio(5.1). I stream a lot from my nvidia shield so I need that connected as well. It doesn't seem to have any audio out ports unlike the amazon fire tv. Any help is appreciated. I am a completely clueless when it comes to audio.

Fine.

When I still had my old stereo, I just hooked up my HDMI sources directly to the TV (it has 4 HDMI inputs) and the sources happen to also have TOSLINK outs, so that went to the stereo. I bought no adapter.
