Connecting an older mobile phone to phone jack

Dumb question I'm sure, but is it at all possible to hook an older mobile phone to a modem cable or splice a cable in and jack in to a phone jack in the wall of a house, and actually place calls? Or is this science fiction crap?

I've never seen this been done before...
I'm not saying its impossible but I think the only way around that would be to connect the modem to the computer and then the computer to the phone and build some kind of program..
