Hello,

I would like to connect my laptop to my av receiver and therefore the TV so I can watch movies etc.

I have tried to do this but I cant get it to work.

I have a HP pavillion that is running windows 7 and it has a HDMI output which I have tried connecting to my Harmon Kardon 1710 avr.

.I have tried extending the display on my laptop but nothing comes through onto the TV. I have made sure that I have selected the right source option on the receiver as well and tried different HDMI outputs on the reciever but again just a blank TV screen...?

It seems to recognise something because usually if there is a no signal message displayed on the TV if nothing is there - but in this case the TV screen is just blank which makes me think that its recognising something.

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Christina

Solution

It's the wrong playback device now. Goto control panel / sound / playback devices and set the hdmi port as the default device. While playing music, you can see the bars moving next to the active device. Windows should automatically switch back to the internal speakers, if you unplug the hdmi cable.

Try to clone the desktop first to make sure, there is something to display at all. Does you Pavilion regognize the TV as a display in the resolution menu? (right click on the desktop / resolution). Do you see the hdmi resolution (1920*1080) there, or is it a different resolution?

Try connecting the laptop directly to the TV with the same cable that connects the receiver to the TV.
If that works then the receiver is not passing the signal. Check to see that the input menu is set correctly for the HDMI input you want to use.
If it does not work then try lowering the resolution outputting to the TV in the video control panel of the laptop. You can also try a different cable going to the TV.

Hello,

Thanks for your help so far - I have connected the laptop directly to the TV and it works that way - so I guess the cable is fine.

The highest resolution I can get on this laptop it seems is 1366 x 768. I guess this isn't high enough to display onto the TV via the AVR and thats why it won't work??

1366 x 768 might be the resolution of the TV? At least 1280*720 should work.

Hello,

I have managed to do it. I can get the picture at least on the TV but now I can't get any sound coming out the speakers. The sound is just coming out of the computer still.

I thought HDMI cables carried both audio and visual signals?? I guess I need another cable for the sound?

Or is there something I need to do with the computer??

Thanks for your help.
