Connecting laptop to Surround sound speaker system

WHat is best way to connect my laptop to the logitech surround sound DTS system?
I dont have a SPDIF (optical) port on laptop. Im using rca to 3.5 plug.
The laptop is conntected to a TV via hdmi can I then connect from tv to the speaker system with optical cable and it will work?

Mine does, but sure fire way to know is to try it. Worst can happen, doesn't work, nothing is gonna blow up. Everybody have an extra cables or 2 lying around right?
