Hi, I've been trying to find an answer to this question for the past couple weeks, but so far, no luck.

I have a Gateway p-7811 fx laptop which I have been connecting successfully to my Samsung T260 HD Monitor/HDTV via hdmi. My question is if I can connect further from the monitor to a set of 5.1 speakers. I was thinking that it would be possible to connect from the digital audio (optical) out on the monitor to a set of speakers with the same input. My issue is that I don't know if transferring from my laptop to monitor via hdmi supports 5.1 channels; if not I assume it would then limit any output to the speakers, making 5.1 channels overkill. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Solution
Well, as far as I know HDMI in computers should support the 5.1. . . its the 7.1 / 8 that's problemtic (I know of nothing that does this)

You never know until you try!

Trying is the first step towards failure.
