I have a Toshiba LCD TV 40E220U, and I am attempting to connect external speakers. The speakers have the red and white cords for audio input. I connected those cords to a digital to audio adapter, and I connected the adapter to the "Digital Audio Out" on the back of the TV (using an optical cable, the one where the red light shines through after being connected to the TV). However, sound is still not coming through the speakers. The speakers work when plugged in to other devices, so I know it's an issue with the TV and not the speakers. HELP!!!!!!! Please :)

Solution
Ok, the issue should be this: See the Digital Output format choice? It has to be set to PCM for the digital to audio adapter to work.

Please report to us if it worked. ^^

That's what I'm thinking, but it's not working either. I'm trying to attach photos to this thread so that you can see what it looks like - but I don't know how to do that either lol

Hello.

Just post your pictures directly in a link. Or use a website. ex. http://imgur.com/ (no need to make an account)

First of all, are your speakers amplified speakers? If they're simply passive speakers, your setup will not work. Any model number fore those?
Also, is you Optical to RCA converter properly powered on? Those converters need a 5V supply usually.

Here are the photos of the TV audio setup (hopefully this link works): http://imgur.com/a/0dfSt
I have no idea about the speaker... They're "Wireless Bluetooth 2.1 speaker system with subwoofer" by iLive. As far as the converter... I think its plugged in properly. I have it connected to a surge protecter that's connected to the wall outlet.
