I mistakenly thought I could use V-COM's CopyCommander 9 to backup my C drive to my D drive. !!!WRONG!! It keeps telling me that my D drive is "not empty", even though it is completely emtpy of all data, and then, when I let it go ahead "anyway", it then says that my D drive does not have enough space. ?????? I can't figure out if this program is worth anything at all? It cost me $30 - I think I just wasted 30 bucks - unless there is something here I am missing. By the way, there is a simple way to backup your C drive to your D drive, without having to spend a dime. First, erase (or format) your D drive so that it has enough free space for the USED space on your C drive. Then, go into a DOS BOX (NOT reboot to msdos) in Win98SE, and type in the following command:

xcopy32 c:\*.* d:\*.* /E /H /R /K /C /D

Just wait and then you have to set your D drive "active" (if you haven't already done that), and it is bootable exactly as was your C drive. If you C drive gets corrupted, you can just switch and boot from your D drive.
I wonder if maybe I can get my $30 back from Fry's (?????) - probably not. littleberry

Why not just get a pci raid card, plug both drives into that, and do a raid1. Then you have a constant mirror image of the hard drives. If one fails it will be like nothing happened at all.
You can get an ide raid card capable of raid0,1 for $30 or less easily. Sata might be a tad more.

Thanks, Folken, but it is not hardware failure that keeps me having to re-install win98se all the time. It is viruses that I get from being on the internet (I guess). It always happens that after a month or two my system gets very sluggish and wierd things start happening - this didn't start until a couple or three years ago, and I had to just go through win98se installation clean to get rid of whatever was corrupting my system. Having a mirror drive wouldn't avoid this. What I will do now (that I know about the xcopy command) is to re-install win98se with my basic system (video, audio, board drivers, basic s/w), then BEFORE I log onto the internet, I will COPY the C drive to a fresh D drive that I will then take offline. That way, when my C drive gets corrupted from being on the internet so much, I'll just take it out and put in the D - then I'll quick format the C and COPY the clean system over to it. That way, the theory is that I will not have to re-install win98se for a long time. But this Copy COmmander9 seems pretty much worthless for what I have in mind. littleberry

Symantec ghost might be a good solution then. You can make a boot disk that will do disk mirroring. When ever you want to make a backup just plug in the drive to mirror to, boot off the ghost disk, and tell it to mirror the c: drive to d: drive. It even has an easy gui :) not bad for a single dos boot floppy (2 floppies on the newest version).
You could even put your backup drive or both drives in 5.25" hotswap cages. Then hooking up the second drive to backup would be as easy as turning the key to turn it on :) You could easily take out/replace drives too.

Sounds like spyware to me. Look at the free software links thread above and for God's sake... get yourself an antivirus and antispyware software... that will save you having to reload every two months.

If you design software that is fool-proof, only a fool will want to use it.

I just think you should invest in some antivirus and stay off the porn sites. :)

Running a raid might help, but going to Windows XP and using a system restore point might benefit you.
