I agree completely with Catherine on the matter of sexual repression in this country, but there are other reasons prostitution is illegal in most states: STDs. Sure, it could be properly regulated like it is in Nevada with proper testing and a controlled environment, but you'd never be able to implement that scale of regulation in the private want-ads sector.
