Dell laptop. Cursor jumps around whilst typing. Sometimes message just started & the email sends itself. Also sometimes partial erasure of message.

Check for a touchpad disable key on your keyboard, or you can use free software designed to disable the touchpad while the keyboard is in use. Oftentimes people grace the pad with their palms while typing, causing what you described.

Cursor jumping around when the mouse is moved?

Before trying all the exotic cures prescribed on this site, simply change or clean your mouse pad.
A quick check if this is your problem: Move the mouse to a clean spot on your bare desktop and test it.

I clean my pads with water, a dab of dish soap, and a stiff brush. You will be amazed at the filth that comes off the pad and turns the sink water to mud. Rinse well, squeege off the front and back, then hang the pad up to dry for a day or two.

99% Isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth will work well to eliminate surface grime. Dish soap - and a stiff brush? - seems excessively harsh, what with the degreasing agents in a lot of formulas.
