My sister just called, her laptop isn't working anymore. I went over to see if I could help in anyway but I couldn't. The power supply seems to be okay as the led is on. The battary should not be empty as far as I could make out. Yet, when turning on the laptop nothing happens. No post, no beeps, no nothing. What could be the problem?

Any information would be appriciated.

Take out the battery first and see if it got hit with a voltage spike from an electrical storm.

Otherwise, if the machine isn't posting open it up and check that the memory didn't come unseated.

My sister took out the battery and the laptop works!!! She's very happy. But now I wonder what does this mean!? How can a battery stop the laptop from working?

Let me guess... Dell, inspiron ?
Oh... no, no Dell. She has a HP laptop.

I'm sure she is very careful with the machine. I think...
